Religious Education

Our vision

At Hobletts Manor Infants and Nursery School, religious education helps children understand themselves, other people and the diverse world in which they live. Our curriculum follows the school’s locally agreed syllabus. It develops knowledge of Christianity and other religions and introduces children to non-religious worldviews.

We want children to recognise that people hold different beliefs and to approach these differences with curiosity, kindness and respect.

What children learn

In Nursery and Reception, children encounter different beliefs, celebrations, traditions and communities through stories, discussion, play and first-hand experiences. They begin to notice similarities and differences between families and communities and develop positive attitudes towards the beliefs and experiences of others.

In Years 1 and 2, children learn about religious and non-religious beliefs, stories, celebrations, practices, symbols, places of worship and sources of wisdom. They consider what it means to belong to a community and how beliefs can influence people’s choices and ways of life.

Children learn to:

  • recall and use appropriate subject vocabulary;
  • ask thoughtful questions about religion and belief;
  • identify similarities and differences;
  • connect beliefs with practices and ways of living; and
  • express simple, reasoned responses respectfully.

How learning develops

Important knowledge, concepts and vocabulary are carefully sequenced and revisited. Teachers use stories, texts, artefacts, drama, artwork, discussion, visitors and visits to bring learning to life.

Appropriate connections with personal development help children explore identity, belonging, respect and difference, while RE retains its distinctive subject content.

Inclusion and enrichment

Visual resources, artefacts, adapted activities, focused vocabulary and different ways of communicating enable every child, including children with SEND, to participate meaningfully.

Visits to places of worship and encounters with members of religious communities provide authentic insights into lived belief. Resources reflect religious and cultural diversity and show that individuals within the same religion or worldview may express their beliefs differently.

By the end of Year 2

Children have developed an age-appropriate foundation of religious literacy. They can recall important knowledge, use relevant vocabulary and talk respectfully about religious and non-religious beliefs. They are beginning to compare ideas and give reasons for their responses.

Important to note

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of religious education (RE). If you are considering withdrawal, please contact the Headteacher through the school office at admin@hoblettsinfants.herts.sch.uk or call the office on 01442 213854. We will be happy to discuss what is taught in RE and how your request will be arranged.
