Computing

Our vision

At Hobletts Manor Infants and Nursery School, computing prepares children to participate confidently, creatively and safely in an increasingly digital world. Our curriculum develops understanding across computer science, information technology and digital literacy.

We want children to understand how technology works, recognise its uses beyond school and make safe, respectful and responsible choices.

What children learn

In Nursery and Reception, children encounter technology through purposeful play, discussion and adult-supported experiences. They explore familiar devices and technological objects, consider how they work and learn about safe and appropriate use.

In Years 1 and 2, children learn to:

  • understand that an algorithm is a sequence of instructions;
  • create and debug simple programs;
  • use logical reasoning to predict how simple programs will behave;
  • use technology to create, organise, store, change and retrieve digital content;
  • recognise uses of information technology beyond school;
  • use technology safely and respectfully;
  • keep personal information private; and
  • know where to seek help when something online worries them.

Online safety is taught throughout computing and the wider curriculum rather than only during a special week or standalone topic.

How learning develops

Teachers introduce subject vocabulary, model processes and provide opportunities to practise, create and solve problems. Programming develops from simple sequences towards more complex instructions and debugging.

Children use resources such as Purple Mash, tablets and Chromebooks, but learning focuses on transferable knowledge and skills rather than individual devices or programs.

Inclusion and enrichment

Modelling, repetition, visual instructions, Widgit-supported vocabulary and assistance with navigation or logging in help every child, including children with SEND, participate successfully.

Online-safety resources, including Smartie the Penguin and Safer Internet activities, help children apply safe and respectful behaviours beyond computing lessons.

By the end of Year 2

Children can explain and follow simple algorithms, create and debug simple programs and use logical reasoning to predict outcomes. They can create and manage digital content for different purposes and understand how technology is used in everyday life. They know how to protect personal information, behave respectfully and seek help when something concerns them.
