Art

Our vision

At Hobletts Manor Infants and Nursery School, art and design is an essential part of a rich and ambitious curriculum. It gives children opportunities to explore ideas, express themselves and develop individual responses to the world.

We want children to experience the enjoyment and achievement that come from creating and to see themselves as artists.

What children learn

In Nursery and Reception, children explore media and materials through play, mark-making, drawing, painting, modelling, collage and multi-sensory experiences. Adults model techniques and vocabulary while open-ended opportunities encourage curiosity and independence.

In Years 1 and 2, children use a range of materials creatively and develop techniques in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and other art forms. They explore colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Children learn about artists, craft makers and designers from different periods, places, cultures and traditions. They use appropriate vocabulary to discuss creative work, explain their choices and express their opinions respectfully. They also learn to reflect on their own work and consider how it might be developed.

How learning develops

Knowledge and techniques are carefully sequenced and revisited. Teaching takes account of children’s developing motor skills and introduces tools and processes at an appropriate stage.

Teachers model techniques clearly while preserving opportunities for experimentation and individual expression. As children progress, they select materials more purposefully, use techniques with increasing control and make more deliberate creative choices.

Inclusion and enrichment

Accessible tools, adapted resources, visual prompts, carefully sequenced instructions and vocabulary support help every child, including children with SEND, participate in the full artistic process. Children are not expected to produce identical outcomes; individuality and personal response are valued.

Creative clubs, encounters with artists and galleries, and the annual exhibition give children opportunities to broaden their experiences, share their work and take pride in what they have achieved.

By the end of Year 2

Children have developed a growing repertoire of artistic knowledge, techniques and vocabulary. They can select and use materials with increasing confidence, discuss creative work and explain some of their choices. They leave Hobletts Manor ready to experiment, express their ideas and recognise that art and design belongs to everyone.
